| RoadPilot products in relation to the
proposed - Road Safety Bill 2005
The proposed 2005 Road Safety Bill from the
Department for Transport (DfT) intends to prohibit devices
that detect ‘speed assessment equipment’. GPS devices will
not be affected by the legislation and the DfT currently has
no plans to propose a ban on GPS-based speed camera location
products.
In a statement published in May 2005 the DfT
wrote as follows:
“GPS Systems are developing rapidly and
can contain all sorts of additional information to assist
drivers in their driving. For example, they can alert drivers
to posted speed limits, the approach to schools and hospitals
and the location of accident black spots. Once the shadow
of a potential ban for detectors generally is removed via
legislation, these devices can be promoted as genuine road
safety aids”
All RoadPilot products are passive GPS systems.
The only RoadPilot equipment that may become illegal under
the new legislation would be the radar horn and the laser
detector attachments. RoadPilot has never offered for sale
any laser jamming equipment. If the legislation becomes law,
the radar and laser attachments can simply be removed from
RoadPilot’s line-up of products. The function and availability
of the micro RoadPilot, RoadPilot Pro and Geodesy GPS units
will not be affected.
Existing users of a radar horn or laser head
can easily remove them from their main GPS unit by simply
unplugging the lead. The operation of the main unit will not
be affected.
RoadPilot products are designed to aid driver
safety on the roads by making drivers more aware of their
speed while driving, by reminding them of the current speed
limit and by giving them advance warning of potential changes
to the traffic flow at speed camera locations.
RoadPilot understands that the main intention
of safety cameras is to reduce speeding, reduce accidents
and save lives, and RoadPilot products support this effort.
None of RoadPilot’s current products interfere, or block Police
equipment or any other form of road-safety equipment. In the
interest of safety, RoadPilot has always and will continue
to cooperate fully with law enforcement and road safety authorities.
